Abstract

This paper addresses the methodology of Al-Zamakhshari in Qur’anic exegesis through his renowned work Al-Kashshāf. The researcher chose this topic due to Al-Zamakhshari's unique approach to interpreting the verses of the Noble Qur’an in this book. Al-Kashshāf is undoubtedly of great significance as one of the prominent exegetical works that focus on the linguistic dimension of the Qur’anic text. It serves various scholars: the jurist derives legal rulings through linguistic understanding and determines what is lawful and unlawful; the grammarian bases, grammatical rules upon it and uses it to distinguish between correct and incorrect expressions; the rhetorician draws on it to appreciate the eloquence and literary style of the Qur’an and understands the methods of rhetoric in constructing speech, among other uses. The main objective of this paper is to highlight the role of the eminent scholar Al-Zamakhshari in uncovering the rhetorical secrets embedded within the Qur’an through his interpretation. Due to his evident and flawed Mu‘tazilite (rationalist) creed that is reflected in his tafsir, the study also points out and exemplifies some of these doctrinal inclinations from his commentary. The researcher employed the methods of compilation, tracing, and induction to define key terms related to the topic, provide a biographical overview of the author, and extract appropriate examples from his work.
